For 10 years, the Maryland Aviation Association has conducted the BWI Summer Youth Initiative to inspire the next generation of aviation professionals. Since 2024, Atlas has proudly partnered with the initiative, helping introduce local students to the many career opportunities that keep the aviation industry moving. 

This summer, nearly 50 students between the ages of 11 and 17 “took flight” beyond the classroom during a weeklong program at BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport. Led by Atlas and other airport partners, students gained firsthand exposure to aviation careers while learning about the teamwork, technology, and operations that power one of the region’s busiest airports. 

“We’re more than glad to participate and give back because community engagement is so important,” said Daniel Wheeler, Atlas’ BWI Ground Support Station Manager. “There are careers beyond just being a pilot. I enjoy showcasing all the different facets that make up the large ‘orchestra’ of a large airport. Students get a real sense of the scale and teamwork it takes to keep everything running.”

Throughout the program, students explored a wide range of aviation careers, including aircraft maintenance, air traffic control, drone operations, cargo logistics, and flight simulation. During a visit to Southwest Airlines’ maintenance hangar, they learned how aircraft are inspected and maintained, heard directly from aviation maintenance technicians, and discovered the training and skills needed to pursue careers in the field. 

“This is an experience the campers will carry with them for many years to come. By combining hands-on learning with plenty of fun, we are helping students discover all of the incredible opportunities that exist for them and inspiring the next generation of aviation professionals,” said Matt Peterson, Manager of Corporate and Community Relations for the Summer Youth Initiative.  

By the end of the week, students left with more than just memories of touring an airport. They gained a deeper appreciation for the collaboration behind every flight and a clearer understanding of the opportunities available for them within the aviation industry.
