Ashton Weissmann may only be 11 years old, but he’s already looking to the skies for a career.
Earlier this summer, Ashton attended Aviation Camp at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG). The camp is run by The Aviation Museum of Kentucky.
At aviation camp, students get to learn about aerospace and navigation, get time in flight simulators and take a flight lesson in a Cessna 172. This year, students at the CVG camp visited the FEAM hangar, met with aircraft mechanic students from Epic Flight Academy and learned about the airport’s Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting Facility from firefighters.
“This was Ashton’s first time attending the camp,” said his mom, Mandy Weissmann, Admin Tech Ops Maintenance Specialist at Atlas. “His favorite part was seeing an Atlas 747 in the FEAM hangar, learning how much cargo it can hold and finding out that it is loaded from the nose. He also loved flying in a Cessna.”
Mandy has been with Atlas since June 2023 when she was referred to the Company by Mike Citrano, Vice President, Maintenance. Little did Mandy know that by joining Atlas, her son’s passion for aviation would be ignited.
“My husband and I have been trying for quite some time to find Ashton’s ‘thing,’” said Mandy. “He loved that I was working for an airline and really got into getting to know Atlas. He and my husband built a massive model airport in our basement and have populated it with many model airplanes – primarily Atlas model airplanes!”
Ashton has decided he wants to be a pilot and he and his family are already researching local high schools that offer aviation programs.
“I am forever grateful to Mike for encouraging me to join Atlas and for supporting Ashton in his endeavors.”
